Dedicated to 30th anniversary of disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station
The Chernobyl disaster occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the town of Pripyat, in Ukraine . An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over of part of Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Eastern Europe.
The Chernobyl disaster was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history in terms of cost and casualties. The liquidation to contain the contamination and avert a greater catastrophe ultimately involved over 500,000 liquidators. Liquidators were the civil and military personnel, firefighters, medical workers, who were called upon to deal with consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster from all of 15 republic former Soviet Union. Some of them received the highest radiation doses and died in the first few years after the disaster. Surviving liquidators have major long-term health problems.
This site contains series of artworks "Pripyat Lights, or Chernobyl Shadows" of artist Roman Gumanyuk.
The series includes 30 paintings about Chernobyl accident. This series of artworks was exhibited under the same name "Pripyat Lights, or Chernobyl Shadows" at the National Fine Art Museum of Kyrgyzstan in Bishkek, at the Kasteev State Museum of Arts of Kazakhstan in Almaty, at the Vashchenko Art Gallery of Gomel in Belarus, at the Halahan Art Museum of Chernihiv and at the Museum of Chernobyl in Kharkiv in Ukraine in 2012-2013 and at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia in 2016 .
Roman Gumanyuk’s first exhibition, "Under a Starry Sky", took place at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Kyrgyzstan in 2000. The exposition was dedicated to the Chernobyl accident also. Some 12 years later the artist paid a visit to Ukraine, toured the polluted areas and the abandoned town of Pripyat, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant itself. Impressions from what the artist saw made the basis for his present series of artworks.
Roman Gumanyuk the author held 23 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus and Bulgaria. Participated in exhibitions of Kyrgyz artists in Avignon (France) and Washington USA).
He is also participant of the VI International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence (Italy). The artist works in various genres and techniques. His works are in private collections and art connoisseurs from around the world.
